Although this working class romance is a stand-alone novel, the books are best enjoyed when read in order.īook 1: Carving for Miss Coventry by Deborah M. This is the fourth book in the clean and sweet Regency romance Sons of Somerset series. Sons of Somerset: A Clean Regency Romance SeriesĬan five working class men find love on the job? As a Taiwanese immigrant growing up between two cultures, Ruth was always on a mission to prove her worth, until she came to truly understand the one thing that changes everything: the extravagant, undeserved gift of grace from a merciful God. Ruth Chou Simons knows something about feeling measured by achievement, performance, and the approval of others. And we end up constantly feeling like we’re behind, lacking, and failing-at home, at work, with friends, with God. Despite all the affirming memes and self-reflections that dominate social media feeds, approval and worth often seem assigned to what we do rather than who we are. In this hustling, image-forward age of opportunity, we feel more anxious than ever. And because she's described as female, she can serve as a plucky role model. Roz encounters numerous obstacles - the physical terrain, violent storms, the initial hostility of the animals, the loss of a foot, a very harsh winter - but she's resourceful and overcomes all with grace. But Brown takes some liberties - for instance, the animals observe a "Dawn Truce" so they can meet each day as a community without threat of predators stalking prey. For the most part, the animals are characterized naturally, not anthropomorphized. When Roz the robot has to learn to survive on an island, she observes the animals who live there and mimics their behavior. "Shipwrecked robot" is the clever twist in this wilderness-survival tale that delivers fun information about animal behavior along with lessons about friendship and a heart-tugging emotional punch. She hopes to rekindle their attachment, but someone else has designs on him too. The world of Brighton offers new and exciting social opportunities and Jane is delighted to find that Lieutenant Weston will be there with his regiment. She has travelled to Brighton to take up a position as companion to a wheelchair-bound widow named Mrs Sealy. The Other Miss Bates focuses on Jane Bates, who we only know as the late Jane Fairfax in the original Emma. If anything, I enjoyed this book even more. It doesn’t matter if you haven’t read the first or indeed if you haven’t read Emma, though I would urge you to read both. I thoroughly enjoyed Mrs Bates of Highbury by Allie Cresswell earlier this year (review here) and jumped at the chance to read the second in this trilogy which forms a prequel to Jane Austen’s Emma. Told from Bennett’s point of view, Time After Time will satisfy readers looking for a fresh, exciting, and beautifully-written love story, both those who are eager to find out what’s next for Time Between Us's Anna and Bennett and those discovering their story for the first time. Will the decisions he makes from that point on cement a future he doesn't want? They each are confident that they’ll find a way to make things work.until Bennett witnesses a single event he never should have seen (and certainly never expected to). It’s not a perfect arrangement, though, with Bennett unable to stay in the past for more than brief visits, skipping out on big chunks of his present in order to be with Anna in hers. And they found a way to stay together, against all odds. They fell in love, even though they knew they shouldn't. The two of them never should have met, but they did. Add to this the intertwined themes of aching musical motifs: Rachmaninoff’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, and John Barry’s Somewhere in Time theme. Somewhere in Time is a romantic drama that addresses eternal love, grief and loss. The screenplay was by Richard Matheson, from his book Bid Time Return, and the haunting score was created by John Barry, the composer for eleven James Bond films. It was Reeve’s favourite of all his movies. The first film that the late Christopher Reeve made, after his breakthrough role as Superman (1978), was Somewhere in Time (1980), directed by Jeannot Szwarc.
